Three years ago Dr. George Tiller was murdered in church by someone who would have been a terrorist if he weren't white and Christian.

Revised directive: It is forbidden for you to interfere with human history until you've at least taken a class on it.

6/1/12 12:25 am - [info]desigrl posting in [info]whatwasthatbook - Hunger Games-esque dystopian novel

Was reminded of a book I read in the 90s after reading the Hunger Games trilogy.

Don't remember much about the book except: involved children (varying ages) being dropped into a white labyrinth/maze of rooms (seamless, some had stairs) randomly and it's a survival story. Some work together, some independently. They have to overcome various challenges (this helps them move on/escape current room).
There is some sort of controlling force that drops in the kids and changes things in the maze if it's getting too easy (I think...).

Note: The stark, bright whiteness is very prominent in my memory.

Sorry. I know this isn't much to go off of.

My dad's Miniature Schnauzer has recently been diagnosed as diabetic. Are any of you using a human glucometer and test strips to monitor a dog's blood sugar? (Dr. Internet gave me conflicting advice about whether this works.)

Chez Mammal, Juan and I just had a conversation after watching "The Launch Acceleration" episode of The Big Bang Theory wherein we compared and contrasted Chuck Lorre's title card at the end of the episode with a certain portion of Ntozake Shange's "For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Enuf."

I love my Juan-mammal. Have I mentioned that I love my Juan-mammal?

Use of a clay modeling task to reduce chocolate craving.

“Elaborated Intrusion theory (EI theory; Kavanagh, Andrade, & May, 2005) posits two main cognitive components in craving: associative processes that lead to intrusive thoughts about the craved substance or activity, and elaborative processes supporting mental imagery of the substance or activity. We used a novel visuospatial task to test the hypothesis that visual imagery plays a key role in craving. Experiment 1 showed that spending 10min constructing shapes from modeling clay (plasticine) reduced participants’ craving for chocolate compared with spending 10min ‘letting your mind wander’. Increasing the load on verbal working memory using a mental arithmetic task (counting backwards by threes) did not reduce craving further. Experiment 2 compared effects on craving of a simpler verbal task (counting by ones) and clay modeling. Clay modeling reduced overall craving strength and strength of craving imagery, and reduced the frequency of thoughts about chocolate. The results are consistent with EI theory, showing that craving is reduced by loading the visuospatial sketchpad of working memory but not by loading the phonological loop. Clay modeling might be a useful self-help tool to help manage ...
